Bat Mitzvah Hair

Getting yourself ready for the Bar or Bat Mitzvah (1-28-08)

By: Romi Sussman (www.RomiSussman.com)

I’m always fascinated when I go to a bat mitzvah by the bat mitzvah hair. If you’ve ever been to a bat mitzvah, you know what I’m talking about. These little girls, who usually have quite normal hair, suddenly look like they come straight out of the pages of a fashion magazine. Their hair is braided in more ways than I’m able to count, and they have ribbons, sparkles, and other decorative objects, tied in to boot.

Usually, it’s just the bat mitzvah girl who gets to have this luxury. But, if she has sisters, they often have this decorative style as well. And, sometimes the best friends go in for the ride. I went to interview a bat mitzvah hairdresser and to watch her work her magic to get behind the scenes of this phenomena. She said that families are willing to pay big bucks to have these styles and that they generally take her about an hour to produce. She described a few harrowing incidences – when she had to tell parents that their daughters had lice (yicks!) or that their daughters really needed a good dandruff shampoo. She keeps a bunch of sparkly nail polishes in her salon as well, and does the girl’s nails as part of the package. While she’s a regular hair dresser during the day, she said that her real money actually come from bat mitzvah hair.

You never know what you’ll discover on the bar and bat mitzvah path!
